Karate as a Path of Openness, Curiosity, and Connection

I believe that it is entirely possible to study an authentic Okinawan karate lineage with full dedication, without closing yourself off from the richness that the wider world of budo has to offer. For me, inquisitive curiosity is not something to be feared. It is something to be embraced as an essential part of personal growth.

Having the courage to look beyond the borders of your own style, to explore contrast and alternative approaches, can profoundly deepen your journey as a budoka. It enriches not only your technique, but also your perspective, your spirit, and your overall understanding.

That said, my heart lies with Kobayashi Shorin Ryu.It is where I feel most at home. It brings me joy, clarity, and inspiration time and again. The simplicity, the sharpness, the structure — it moves me deeply, and I practice it with genuine love and respect.Every training in this style feels like coming home.

At the same time, I remain open to exchange with other passionate karateka.Whether you walk the exact same kata as I do, or follow a completely different path, if you practice with passion and sincerity, I feel a sense of kinship.True connection is not built solely on uniformity, but on mutual respect and heartfelt curiosity toward one another.

As a Dutch martial artist, I come from a culture of openness, curiosity, and cross-border exploration, and that resonates with who I am.I have deep respect for everyone who walks their own path, even when that path differs from mine.

To me, that is the spirit of budo in the 21st century: respect, growth, freedom, and connection.

“A stream that closes itself off will dry up.But a river that branches out will always find its way to the ocean.”
